Why House Cleaners Charge What They Do
If you’ve ever looked at a cleaning quote and thought, “Wait… why does it cost that much?” you’re not alone. It’s one of the most common questions we get, and it’s a fair one.
So instead of dancing around it or using business jargon, I want to explain it in a very real, down to earth way.
When you hire a professional cleaner, you’re not just paying for the few hours someone is inside your home. You’re paying for everything that makes that visit possible and everything that makes it done well.
First, there are the basics people don’t always think about.
Professional supplies and equipment are expensive and they need to be replaced often. Vacuums wear out (and we don’t use the cheap ones). Mop heads get swapped constantly. Cleaning products that are effective and safe for homes cost more than the bargain stuff, especially when you’re trying to avoid harsh chemicals.
There’s also transportation. Fuel, drive time, and wear and tear on vehicles add up quickly when you’re traveling to multiple homes every day.
Then there’s insurance, licensing, and taxes. A whopping 30% of our income is immediately put aside for taxes. So your $150 cleaning fee truly pays us $100. These things aren’t optional if you’re running a legitimate business. They protect both the cleaner and the homeowner, and they are part of doing this work responsibly.
But the biggest part of the cost is the work itself.
Cleaning is physical. It’s repetitive, demanding, and hard on the body in ways people don’t always realize. Bending, lifting, scrubbing, reaching, and standing for hours takes a toll. Most families do these thorough cleanings once a week. We do them all day every day. This isn’t light work, even if it looks simple from the outside.
It’s also skilled work.
A good cleaner knows how to clean efficiently without rushing. They know what products to use on which surfaces so nothing gets damaged. They know how to move through a home in a way that actually makes a difference, instead of just making it look clean on the surface (oh the surface cleaners!!)
They know how to work around kids, pets, clutter, personal items, and busy households without judgment. That matters.
You’re also paying for reliability and trust.
Showing up on time. Communicating clearly. Respecting your space. Being consistent from one visit to the next. These things don’t happen by accident. They happen because systems are in place and people are paid fairly enough to stay, care, and take pride in what they do.
We believe cleaners deserve to earn a living wage. That means not packing schedules so tight that people are rushed and exhausted. It means not cutting corners to race to the next job. It means valuing this work instead of treating it like something disposable.
Our goal has never been to be the cheapest option. There will always be someone willing to charge less, often by rushing, underpaying, or skipping important steps.
Our goal is to be the kind of company you feel comfortable letting into your home. The kind you don’t have to supervise. The kind that treats your space with respect and care.
If that’s what you’re looking for, we’re probably a good fit. If you’re just looking for the lowest possible price, we might not be.
And that’s okay.
But hopefully this gives a little clarity into why professional cleaning costs what it does, and why those costs exist for a reason.
Thanks for trusting people like us with your home. It truly means more than you know. 💛
