How Do I Prep for Professional Cleaning?
This is one of the most common questions we get, and I love that people ask it because it usually comes from a good place. People want to be helpful. They want things to go smoothly. And sometimes they’re also a little worried about doing something “wrong.”
So let’s clear that up first.
You do not need to make your house perfect before a cleaning. That is not the point.
Prepping for a cleaning is not about impressing anyone. It’s about helping your cleaner spend their time actually cleaning, instead of sorting, guessing, or moving large amounts of stuff around.
The biggest thing that helps is simple.
Pick up personal items from surfaces.
Things like clothes, toys, paperwork, cords, and random daily life clutter. When counters, floors, and tabletops are mostly clear, we can focus on wiping, scrubbing, and detailing instead of deciding where things belong.
If you’re short on time, focus on the main areas.
Kitchen counters
Bathroom counters
Floors in high traffic areas
That alone makes a big difference.
Another helpful step is dishes.
We don’t expect kitchens to be spotless, but having dishes out of the sink or in the dishwasher allows us to actually clean the sink and surrounding area properly. If dishes are left, we’ll work around them, but it does limit what can be done.
Same idea with laundry.
Clean or dirty is fine. Just try to have it contained in baskets or hampers so floors can be vacuumed and mopped without moving piles around.
If there are rooms or areas you don’t want cleaned, or areas you want extra attention on, just tell us. A quick note goes a long way. Cleaning is not one size fits all, and we’d rather know your priorities than guess.
For homes with pets, a heads up is always appreciated. Letting us know if pets will be loose, crated, or not home helps us plan and keeps everyone comfortable.
And here’s something that matters more than people realize.
You do not need to apologize for your house.
Messy does not bother us. Lived in does not scare us. Our job exists because life is busy, overwhelming, or heavy sometimes. We are not walking in expecting a magazine spread.
The goal of prep is not perfection. It’s access.
When we can access the surfaces, floors, and spaces that need cleaning, we can do our job well and give you the best result possible.
If you ever feel unsure about how much to prep, or if you’re having a rough week and can’t do much at all, just communicate. We’d much rather adjust expectations than have you stress about it.
Hiring cleaners should feel like support, not another task you’re anxious about.
You’re allowed to ask for help. And you don’t have to clean before the cleaners to deserve it. 💛
